This year, the bees were treated to the sunniest April on record, the brightest since records began in 1910. While such dry conditions can sometimes pose challenges, especially by reducing moisture in the soil, our hives at Lower Woods were in the perfect location. The area is naturally damp and rich in wildlife, it’s never been converted into farmland precisely because it’s too wet and this gave our bees the edge they needed.
Thanks to an early bounty of willow catkins, the bees got off to a strong start after successfully making it through the winter. From there, they wasted no time making the most of the abundant hawthorn blossoming across Inglestone Common and Lower Woods. They also foraged widely on dandelion, blackthorn, and even wild garlic – all of which were flowering in good numbers due to the warm weather and rich, undisturbed landscape.
The result? A beautiful, light spring honey with floral notes that truly capture the essence of the season.
This year’s spring harvest is a real celebration of nature, sunshine, and the unique environment that our bees call home.
